Being in, on, or around the sea can induce a range of emotions in a person. The vastness and power of the ocean can be humbling and overwhelming, but also inspiring and calming. Water has a profound effect on us both physiologically and emotionally, impacting all five senses at the same time and giving us a totally immersive experience.
The emotions that people experience at the coast include a feeling of adrenaline and excitement when faced by a stormy sea, a sense of awe and nostalgia, feeling reborn, feeling more connected to one’s surroundings, feeling calm, and feeling overwhelmed.
Water triggers the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body’s ‘rest and digest’ response, and the color blue is known to have a calming, therapeutic effect.
Being in, on, or around water can release a cascade of chemicals in our bodies, including dopamine and endorphins, which can boost our mood and make us feel euphoric. Pouring feelings into the seas is an ancient practice, and the oceans and seas have been changing lives since the dawn of time.Â
Emotions that Sea Induce inside a Person
When I look at the ocean, I feel a mixture of emotions.
One is fear.
Seeing how vast the ocean is and just thinking of all the uncertainties that lay beyond the horizon and below the surface makes me afraid.
Next is anger.
As the waves crash onto the shore and rocks, I feel like I want do the same and just unleash my anger. Without fear of destroying something or being judged.
Then, there is sadness.
Looking at the ocean, it seems so empty. It reminds me of the void inside my heart. One that’s as deep as the ocean.
Another is happiness.
For the same reason that the ocean is empty, it makes me happy to know that going out there in the ocean will separate me from humans. I can be free. I can swim. I can laugh.
And lastly, peace.
Despite all the emotions I feel, I know that the waves of time will wash everything away. And after that, all that will be left is peace. No thoughts. No judgments. No pain.
For a brief moment in time.
