On September 1, 2022, the colossal USS George H.W. Bush met the tiny school ship Amerigo Vespucci in the sunny Mediterranean sea.
The contrast between the Nimitz-class supercarrier — 1,092 (333 m) feet long and over 100,000 tons — and the 330 ft (101 m) long, slightly over 4,000 tons Italian three-mast sailing ship was, of course, astounding.
But the conversation that went on between the two vessels was even more remarkable: it represented the follow-up to an exchange that went on between the Amerigo Vespucci and another American aircraft carrier, exactly 60 years ago.
On July 12, 1962, the USS Independence sailed past the full-rigged ship, and flashed the Amerigo Vespucci with the light signal demanding identification. Who are you?, it asked.
“Training ship Amerigo Vespucci, Italian Navy,” was the response.
After a moment, the American carrier signaled back with the comment,
“You are the most beautiful ship in the world.”
Captain David-Tavis Pollard, the commanding officer onboard the USS George H.W. Bush, recreated history by greeting the Vespucci like this:
USS George H.W. Bush: Sailing vessel on my starboard side, please identify yourself.
Amerigo Vespucci: This is Italian Navy ship Amerigo Vespucci — over.
USS George H.W. Bush: Are you the one that sailed by the USS Independence in 1962?
Amerigo Vespucci: Yes, we are. We are the senior national vessel in active duty — over.
USS George H.W. Bush: Amerigo Vespucci — you are still, after 60 years, the most beautiful ship in the world!
You can hear the Max Siragusa, the commanding officer of the Nave Vespucci, wished the USS George H.W. Bush and its crew “fair winds and following seas,” and mentioned how honored he was for the opportunity to celebrate the anniversary of the iconic encounter.
“This ship brought me to U.S. for the first time in my life in 1992, as a midshipman; six years later I had the opportunity to work for two weeks on board the USS Abraham Lincoln,” he added.
The Nave Vespucci is the oldest unit in service in the Italian Navy, and serves as a training ship for Italy’s naval academy sailors. She has been continually active — except during WWII — since February 22, 1931. Most of her training cruises are in European waters, but she has also sailed to North and South America, New Zealand, and navigated the Pacific. In 2002 she undertook a voyage around the world.
The ship, inspired by the style of large late 18th century warships, is painted black with two white stripes and is decorated with intricate arabesques gilded in pure gold leaf. The interiors are also stunning, with glossy oak, mahogany, and walnut furnishing, polished brass instruments, glass doors, and oil paintings.
She employs 26 huge Olona canvas sails and miles of traditional hemp ropes, but is also equipped with auxiliary diesel-electric propulsion and modern electronic navigation instruments.
The times have changed, but the founding values of Navy officers — loyalty, discipline, honor, love of the sea — have not. Likewise, the Amerigo Vespucci has remained almost unchanged since the day she left the Royal Naval Shipyard of Castellammare di Stabia.
And the ship’s motto— ‘Non chi comincia, ma quel che persevera’: Not who begins but he who perseveres — represents the Amerigo Vespucci and the ideals she stands for very well.
