Somewhere in Gulf of Mexico. There, in the small town of Alvarado in the state of Veracruz, there is this cruise liner ‘Enchanted Capri’. It used to be a Soviet vessel called the “Azerbaijan,” but it changed owners several times and now carries the Mexican name “Crucero Encantado.” For a long time, it was used as a floating hotel for oil rig workers in the Gulf of Mexico.
During the transportation of the ship from the port of Coatzacoalcos to Tampico for dismantling, it was stranded on the coast due to a storm. The decision was made to dismantle the liner right there. Despite being intended for dismantling, the work kept getting delayed and the ship decayed and rusted over time.
The captain’s bridge and the entire upper deck have already been dismantled by local craftsmen. They work intermittently, and access to the area is difficult, which allowed the liner to survive for several years.

About MS Enchanted Capri – Crucero Encantado
MS Enchanted Capri is a wrecked Belorussiya-class cruise ship owned by Demar Instaladora y Constructora, Mexico and operated as an accommodation vessel for oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. She was built in 1975 at Wärtsilä Turku Shipyard in Turku, Finland as the 15,409 GRT MS Azerbaydzhan for the Soviet Union-based Black Sea Shipping Company. She had also sailed under the names MS Arkadia and MS Island Holiday.
The ship made headlines when it was arrested in New Orleans due to unpaid wages owed to the crew. After being laid up, the vessel was chartered to the Mexican company Demar Instaladora y Constructora in 2003 and refurbished in 2005.
The Enchanted Capri, with a capacity of 937 passengers and 155 crew members, offered various amenities like swimming pools, restaurants, gift shops, bars, lounges, a theater, disco, gym, sauna, beauty salon, and hospital facilities. Initially chartered by Commodore Cruise Line, the vessel was later used for cruises from New Orleans, Louisiana, with a focus on gaming.
Following Commodore’s bankruptcy and despite of the plans to scrap it in Coatzacoalcos in 2020, the ship grounded in Alvarado after a storm and was left abandoned and eventually grounded in Alvarado, Mexico.
Why Enchanted Capri grounded?
